The Only Known Animal That Can Age Backwards Is Smaller Than Your Fingernail

Backed into a corner by death, one creature does something no other animal on Earth can: it refuses to die. Instead, it ages backwards.

It is called Turritopsis dohrnii — the immortal jellyfish — and fully grown it measures about 4.5 millimetres across, smaller than your little fingernail, trailing 80 to 90 hair-thin tentacles around a glowing red stomach.

How do you un-live?

When an ordinary jellyfish is starved, injured or simply runs out of time, it dies. When Turritopsis faces the same threats, its bell shrinks, its tentacles pull in, and its adult cells perform one of biology's strangest tricks: transdifferentiation. Specialised cells rewind into entirely different cell types, and the drifting adult medusa collapses back into a polyp — the tiny stalk it first grew from. From that polyp, a fresh colony of jellyfish buds off. It is, roughly, a butterfly turning back into a caterpillar and starting life over.

Scientists first documented the reversal in 1996, when a team led by Stefano Piraino reported adult medusae transforming back into polyps in the lab (Biological Bulletin). In theory the loop can repeat without limit — which is why the species is described as biologically immortal.

It doesn't age to death. It ages to zero, and begins again.

The catch (there's always a catch)

Immortal is not the same as invincible. In the wild, most Turritopsis never get the chance to reset — they are eaten, or fall to disease, in the adult stage like any other plankton. Their trick buys a way around ageing, not around predators. So the ocean isn't filling up with immortal jellyfish; it simply holds one animal that has quietly opted out of growing old.

Why serious scientists are obsessed with a speck of jelly

In 2022, researchers sequenced the animal's genome and compared it with a near-identical cousin that can't rewind (PNAS). The immortal jellyfish carried expanded sets of genes for DNA repair, stem-cell renewal and maintaining telomeres — the protective caps on our chromosomes that fray as we age. Nobody is promising human immortality. But an animal that has solved cellular ageing is a very good place to look for clues.

So here's your dinner-table fact, fully sourced: the closest thing to a fountain of youth we have ever found is a jellyfish smaller than a grain of rice, drifting in warm water all over the planet — carried around the world, ironically, in the ballast tanks of our ships.
