Seahorse
“I am the seahorse. In my world it is the father who carries the children, all thousand of them.”
The eggs are placed into a pouch on my belly, and I carry them, and I give birth to them. No other father on Earth truly does. I pair for life, and I begin every morning by dancing with my partner, the two of us turning together, changing colour to match. I am a fish who wears no scales and swims upright, gripping the seagrass with a curling tail so the current can never carry me away from the one I chose. I live in the shallowest water on this page. I never needed the deep.
- Why I matter
- I am a gauge of seagrass and mangrove health. Where I vanish, an entire coastal habitat is already unravelling.
- How you can protect me
- Protect seagrass meadows, refuse dried-seahorse curios and the aquarium trade, and keep the shallows clean.
- If you represent me, you represent
- Devotion, and the courage to do it differently. A love you show up for every single day.
